Hub Requirement
Philips Hue requires the Hue Bridge ($60) for full functionality. LIFX connects directly to your WiFi — no hub, no extra cost, works out of the box.
Color Quality
Both produce excellent colour. Philips Hue uses proprietary Zigbee and is known for consistency across bulbs. LIFX uses powerful LEDs with higher raw brightness.
App & Scenes
Philips Hue app is the most polished smart bulb app available — gradient scenes, entertainment sync, sunrise/sunset routines. LIFX app is good but less feature-rich.
Smart Home Integration
Hue works with Alexa, Google Home, HomeKit, SmartThings, Home Assistant — excellent all-round. LIFX also integrates with all major platforms.
Reliability
Hue's Zigbee mesh is extremely reliable — even WiFi outages don't affect local bulb control. LIFX over WiFi is affected by any WiFi issue.
Price per Bulb
Hue White: ~$15. Hue Color: ~$50 (plus Bridge cost). LIFX White: ~$20. LIFX Color: ~$45. LIFX is better value when accounting for no Bridge requirement.
