Understanding Thermostat Wires
Thermostat wiring uses letter codes that indicate the wire's function. The most important wire for smart thermostats is the C-wire. Without it, your thermostat draws power by "stealing" from other wires โ which causes issues like short-cycling (HVAC turning on and off rapidly) and unreliable connectivity.
- R or Rh/Rc: Power wire โ always required. Red wire providing 24V AC from your HVAC transformer.
- C (Common): Completes the 24V circuit โ required by most smart thermostats for reliable power.
- G: Controls the fan independently from heating or cooling.
- Y or Y1: Activates your air conditioning compressor.
- W or W1: Activates your heating system (furnace or heat pump).
- No C-wire solution: Use a C-wire adapter (like the Nest Power Connector or Ecobee's PEK adapter) or run a new wire from the HVAC air handler.
