Universal Automation Checklist
Before diving into platform-specific fixes, check these universal causes that break automations on every platform:
- Device renamed or removed: Any device in an automation that was renamed, removed, or re-added will break that automation silently. Delete and recreate the automation.
- App or firmware update: Both platform apps (Alexa, Google Home) and device apps push updates that can clear automation permissions. Re-authorize any affected skills or integrations.
- Device offline at trigger time: If the target device is offline when the automation fires, it silently fails. Check device status in the app.
- Conflicting automations: Two automations can fight each other โ one turns lights on, another turns them off based on overlapping triggers. Check for conflicts in your automation list.
- Daylight saving time: Time-based automations shift by 1 hour after DST changes. Manually verify and adjust scheduled times in spring and fall.
- Location services off: Presence-based automations (when I arrive/leave) require location access. Check app permissions in your phone settings.
