Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) learns your schedule automatically over 1-2 weeks and programs itself. Ecobee uses occupancy sensors but no automatic learning.
Room Sensors
Nest does not include room sensors (SmartSensors sold separately for $40 each). Ecobee SmartThermostat Premium includes one SmartSensor in the box. Advantage Ecobee.
C-Wire Requirement
Nest can work without a C-wire using power stealing, but connectivity issues are common. Ecobee requires a C-wire or the included PEK adapter — more reliable.
Voice Assistant
Nest integrates with Google Assistant natively. Also works with Alexa. Ecobee has a built-in Alexa speaker. If you use Alexa daily, Ecobee is unique.
Display & Design
Nest has a premium round design and rich OLED display. Ecobee has a rectangular touchscreen that shows weather and room sensor data. Design preference is personal.
