Security Camera Troubleshooting Guide
Why Do Smart Cameras Go Offline?
Security cameras are particularly sensitive to WiFi signal quality because they stream video continuously. Even a brief signal drop causes the camera to go offline and require a manual reconnect. Key causes include distance from router, interference from other devices, and ISP outages that break the cloud connection.
- WiFi signal strength: Cameras need -65 dBm or better. Anything weaker causes dropouts. Use your router's admin page to check signal levels by device.
- Cloud dependency: Most consumer cameras (Ring, Arlo, Blink) route video through manufacturer cloud servers. An outage on their end takes all cameras offline regardless of your WiFi.
- Power cycling fixes most issues: Unplug for 30 seconds. This resets the camera's network stack and clears memory leaks that accumulate over days of continuous streaming.
- Firmware updates disconnect cameras: Cameras automatically apply firmware at night. If your camera was online yesterday and offline today, check the manufacturer's app for update notes.
- Night vision issues: IR LEDs are the first hardware component to fail in outdoor cameras. If video is dark at night only, this is likely hardware failure.
