Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these steps in order. Takes about 5–10 minutes from start to finish.
Step 1: Turn off power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker before touching any wires. Verify power is off at the existing thermostat.
Step 2: Remove the existing thermostat cover and photograph all wire connections. Note the letter label of every terminal (R, C, G, Y, W).
Step 3: Label each wire using the stickers included with the Nest. Pull the old thermostat base off the wall.
Step 4: Connect each wire to the corresponding terminal on the Nest base. R goes to Rh or Rc, G to G, Y to Y1, W to W1, C to C.
Step 5: Snap the Nest display onto the base. It will power on automatically. Follow the on-screen setup: connect to WiFi, set your schedule preferences.
Step 6: Download the Nest app or Google Home app. Sign in and add your Nest thermostat. Test by setting a temperature above/below current to verify heating and cooling activate.
