Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these steps in order. Takes about 5–10 minutes from start to finish.
Step 1: Check your router broadcasts a 2.4GHz band — most smart home devices don't support 5GHz only. Log into your router admin (192.168.1.1) and verify.
Step 2: Separate your 2.4GHz and 5GHz into different SSIDs (e.g., "HomeNet" and "HomeNet_5G"). This forces smart devices onto the correct band.
Step 3: Restart your router by unplugging for 30 seconds. Then restart smart devices one at a time to see which reconnect.
Step 4: Check your router's DHCP pool — if your router has a maximum of 32 IP leases and you have 40 devices, some will fail to connect.
Step 5: Disable AP Isolation on your router. This setting (sometimes called "Client Isolation") blocks smart devices from communicating with each other.
Step 6: For dead zones: add a mesh WiFi node or WiFi extender in the area. Smart devices need at least -65 dBm signal for reliable connection.
