Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these steps in order. Takes about 5–10 minutes from start to finish.

  • Step 1: Check the microphone mute light — if the ring is red, the microphone is physically muted. Press the microphone button to unmute.
  • Step 2: Say "Alexa" more clearly and at normal speaking volume. Position yourself within 15 feet. Avoid shouting — it distorts the wake word.
  • Step 3: Check the Alexa app Activity log (More → Activity). If it shows "Alexa heard you" but didn't respond, the issue is a cloud connection problem.
  • Step 4: Restart the Alexa device: unplug the power cable for 30 seconds, plug back in, wait 2 minutes for full boot.
  • Step 5: Check the Alexa device WiFi: in the Alexa app → Devices → find your device → WiFi → ensure it's connected to your current network.
  • Step 6: If Alexa responds to some commands but not smart home commands: say "Alexa, discover devices" to refresh device connections.
  • Step 7: Factory reset as last resort: hold the action button for 20 seconds until the light ring turns orange. Set up again in the Alexa app.
