Step-by-Step Guide

Follow these steps in order. Takes about 5–10 minutes from start to finish.

  • Step 1: Set up the smart bulb in its own app first (Hue, LIFX, Govee, Kasa etc.) and confirm it works there before trying Alexa.
  • Step 2: Open the Alexa app → More → Skills & Games → search for your bulb brand → tap Enable and sign in with your bulb account.
  • Step 3: Say "Alexa, discover devices" or go to Devices → + → Add Device and select Lights. Wait up to 60 seconds for discovery.
  • Step 4: If the bulb doesn't appear: ensure both the Alexa device and the smart bulb are on the same WiFi network (2.4GHz).
  • Step 5: Once discovered, go to Devices → Lights to find your bulb. Tap it to rename it to something easy like "Living Room Light".
  • Step 6: Test with "Alexa, turn on Living Room Light" — then try dimming: "Alexa, set Living Room Light to 50 percent".
