Cameras are the most bandwidth-hungry device in most smart homes, which means their problems are disproportionately about your upload speed and storage, not the camera hardware.

Why cameras and doorbells behave the way they do

Unlike a bulb or sensor sending a few bytes of status, a camera is continuously encoding and often streaming video. That makes it uniquely sensitive to upload bandwidth, Wi-Fi congestion at the edge of your router's range, and cloud storage limits — three things owners rarely check before assuming the camera itself is broken.

Common causes, explained

Live view buffers or lags

Live view typically routes through the manufacturer's cloud rather than streaming directly to your phone, so lag usually reflects your home's upload speed and the cloud service's current load, not your Wi-Fi signal at the camera.

Motion events are missed entirely

Battery-powered cameras often use motion-triggered wake, which has a brief delay before recording starts. Fast-moving subjects at close range can pass through the frame before the camera fully wakes, leaving no clip despite motion clearly having occurred.

Notifications arrive without a working clip

Some systems separate the motion-detection alert (fast, local) from the video upload (slower, cloud-dependent). A notification with no viewable clip usually means the video upload lagged behind or failed, not that nothing was recorded.

Outdoor cameras degrade in specific weather

Heavy rain, fog, or direct low-angle sun can both trigger false motion events and attenuate Wi-Fi signal simultaneously, making outdoor cameras seem to fail specifically during certain weather.
